What We Do
Therapeutic Horticulture Events (Seasonal, Community-Based)
Therapeutic horticulture uses plant- and garden-based activities to support wellbeing, confidence, connection, and skill-building in a supportive environment.
Sunrise Village currently offers a few events each year, often centered on seasonal rhythms and outdoor activities that are approachable for people of many ability levels. These events are designed to bring together individuals with disabilities (children & adults), their families, volunteers, and community partners—building relationships through shared experiences.
Seasonal activities may include:
- Seed starting and transplanting (spring)
- Weeding, watering, and garden tending (summer)
- Harvesting and simple garden projects (late summer / fall)
- Simple craft activities connected to nature and the season
Long-Term Vision: The Sunrise Village Farm
Sunrise Village is built on a person-centered care model that prioritizes dignity, connection, and quality of life. We are creating a peaceful, welcoming environment where residents and day program participants can thrive—spending time outdoors, engaging with the land, caring for animals, and building meaningful relationships with one another.
At Sunrise Village, daily life is rooted in purpose and possibility. Residents and community members alike will have opportunities to learn about sustainable farming, healthy living, and how to live in greater harmony with the earth, each other, and themselves.
Throughout the year, participants will engage in a wide range of enriching activities, including therapeutic horticulture, animal care, art therapy, horseback riding, exercise, games, movie nights, and community dinners. These experiences will support personal growth, foster creativity, and build a strong sense of belonging.
The Sunrise Village campus will be thoughtfully designed to support both residential living and community engagement. In addition to resident homes, the property will include office space, agricultural outbuildings, a greenhouse, and a barn for horses and other farm animals. Shared spaces will include a community building with a kitchen and gathering areas, as well as a dedicated arts facility for therapeutic and creative programs. The land itself will feature gardens, orchards, and natural spaces for reflection and connection. A guest house will also be available to welcome visiting family members and interns.
Sustainability is central to our mission. Sunrise Village is committed to eco-friendly practices such as regenerative agriculture, alternative energy systems, water conservation methods, and the use of natural building materials—ensuring that our work benefits both people and the planet.
Community voice is essential to our model. Regular meetings will invite residents, participants, and their families to help shape daily life at Sunrise Village—from planning activities and meals to selecting crops and seasonal projects. Everyone will be encouraged to contribute and take an active role in the community.
Residential Program
Our residential program will be designed to feel like home. We envision multiple houses across the property, each supporting 2–5 residents. Sunrise Village will serve individuals of all ages and abilities, with each resident encouraged to participate in household routines and decision-making to the best of their ability.
Residents will have access to a wide variety of therapeutic, vocational, and recreational opportunities both on-site and throughout the broader community. Regular gatherings—such as shared meals, celebrations, dances, and game or movie nights—will foster connection and joy. In addition, residents will take part in outings to experience all that the Quad Cities community has to offer.
Day Programs
Sunrise Village will offer a range of day services, including pre-vocational training, Supported Community Living (SCL), supported employment, and day habilitation. Participants who prefer to attend other programs within the Quad Cities will continue to have that option. We will also welcome non-residents to join our day programs, expanding our impact within the community.
Farm and horticulture activities will follow the natural rhythm of the seasons. Winter months will focus on seed starting and planning. Spring will bring garden preparation and planting. Summer and fall will be dedicated to tending, harvesting, and preserving crops. In late fall, garden beds will need cleaned and put to rest for winter. Animal care will remain a consistent, year-round responsibility, offering routine, purpose, and connection.
As part of our commitment to community integration and meaningful work opportunities, Sunrise Village will operate a stall at the Farmers’ Market. Participants who are interested will be supported in working at the market, gaining valuable vocational experience. Products may include seedlings, flowers, fresh produce, herbs, baked goods, canned items, and handmade art—each representing the creativity and dedication of our community.
