
Volunteer Opportunities
We are expanding our Board of Directors and team of volunteers with a focus on certain skill sets that will help us grow. Expand the sections below to learn more about how you could help create nurturing and empowering opportunities for individuals with disabilities!
Create digital newsletters, social media posts, and needed graphic design elements. Send email blasts and help manage social media accounts. Help create and manage communications plan. Help create brand guidelines.
Well-connected within the community and enjoys talking with people about our mission. Tasks include building relationships with current and potential donors and volunteers, and managing volunteers for projects.
Nonprofit experience preferred. Oversee financial operations. Prepare annual budgets and 990 with support from the Board President and Secretary.
Well-connected within the community and enjoys talking with people about our mission. Tasks include fundraising campaigns, building relationships with current and potential donors, and applying for grants with the support of the Board President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
Provide guidance on the creation of programming, which includes the development of a therapeutic garden, therapeutic horticulture sessions, and treatment plans.
Assist with therapeutic horticulture session design, as well as therapeutic garden development and maintenance.
Provide guidance to prepare the organization to hire 1099 contractors and W-2 employees.
Experience with nonprofit law. Assist with drafting policies and legal agreements with support of the Board President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Provide legal guidance as needed to ensure we remain compliant with state and federal laws and regulations.
Manage the books and prepare financial reports.
Create Board meeting agendas and meeting minutes, manage business filings (Iowa biennial report, Illinois Charitable Solicitations Registration, Illinois Foreign Entity report).
Experience working with individuals with disabilities and Iowa disability services (programs, waivers, Medicaid). Provide expertise on case management and navigating state systems.
In collaboration with the entire team, provide guidance in the creation of a strategic plan that will be a roadmap for steady, manageable growth.
Provide assistance for indoor or outdoor therapeutic horticulture sessions. Includes light session prep work, set-up, and clean-up. Activities include mild to moderate gardening from seed to harvest, plant-related crafts, cooking, and working with houseplants. Must have experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Time Commitment
Board of Directors
Board service terms are 2 years in length, with the ability to renew. Meetings will take place 10 times per year and last 60-90 minutes. Additional meetings and work will be necessary between meetings. Depending on the role, the time commitment is estimated to be 2-8 hours per month. Prior experience on a nonprofit board is not required.
Non-Board Volunteers
Varies depending on role or tasks. Examples:
- Fundraising- 1-3 hours per month
- Bookkeeper- less than 1 hour per month
- Communications- 1-3 hours per month
- Therapeutic horticulture activity- 1-2 hours per month
